A Fitting Homegrown Brand Name

If you’ve been visiting the hypermarkets, you must have seen this before. If not, I present you the calculator brand that’s trusted by heads of states and their business partners:

A bad attempt at ripping off, or just plainly self-reflective?

What’s Your Cantopop Name?

First of all… I’m no fan of Cantopop, with exceptions to the oldies.

Okay, this ‘phenomenon’ or ‘occurence’ might be less than a decade old, but it wouldn’t stop me from saying this- HK popstars have always had the most ridiculously fascinating English names. While most are ‘formulated’ based on their Chinese given names eg. Hacken Lee (Hak Kan), Eason Chan (Yik Sun) or are valid English names bearing strong similarities to their Chinese given names eg. Joey Yung (Zou Yee), Justin Lo (Jat Tin?), some seem to come straight from nowhere - I remember seeing Coco, Mango, Apple… I won’t be surprised if some popstar wannabes in HK call themselves Chocolate Wong, Vanilla Lee, Cappucino Chan.

Since those people can create such bogus names for themselves and go on to make massive bucks, maybe I should try giving my self a cantopop name:

After scratching my head, back and sack I’ve come to realize that my Chinese given names are too Chinese to have any English phonetic siblings or even cousins. The best ‘valid’ name(s) that I could come up with are Zing-Hue, or Zen-Way… or… Sane-Hue-Way…or I can deviate a little and call myself Jenson.

That basically means that I have to take up the ’straight out of nowhere’ option then, so if Cheung Chun Hin can call himself Hins Cheung, then I should be Huis Lim, or Whois Lim, or Whoace Lim, Hueace Lim, Hoeace Lim, Hoeeyes Lim, Hoeis Lim, or finally, Hoes Lim, wtf? Or lets combine the previously mentioned valid words, hence I’ll be Zenway Lim, making me sound like a founder of a new MLM business specializing in new-age books and dvds.

Or… I present you the director of the new Centre of Sexual Purity and Promiscuity Rehabilitation- Zenhoeaway Lim, PvD MSc BA*.

So what’s your Cantopop name?

*Pvd= Pretty Virgin Dick, MSc= Master of Sexual Confinement, BA= Bachelor of Absitence Studies

Radio Unfriendly

Blogging is not the only thing I’ve started redoing after a three year hibernation- the other being boycotting local commercial radio. Three years ago my modes of transport to (my previous) campus were my uncle’s pickup truck, buses, trains and in dire circumstances… taxis. Over the year, I very very extremely rarely tuned into radio stations, except for excellent internet stations like Radio XY and WOXY. My uncle rarely turned on his car stereo, and when he did, it was AiFM aka non-stop-talking FM. Thus, at that time I was completely detached from mainstream music, while I indulged in the arts and crafts of one independent band over another, and over another. Hell I didn’t even know what Britney Spears’ latest song was at that time.

Then, in mid 2005 I picked up my driver’s license and started driving. When you get bored when driving, without a girlfriend to quarrel with beside you, and with only an ancient stereo (without a CD player) in the car while cassettes are no longer worth buying and in some cases no longer sold, the one thing to do is to turn on the radio. So, I had been fed with the poisonous soup of overplayed songs again after a year or rehabilitation. What’s worse, it was the time when the few of the most irritating songs of the decade, or dare I say of all time, surfaced (yeah especially that James Blunt garbage that would give every male ED when played). While still listened to woxy and radioxy whenever I get the chance to, I was stuck with our radio channels for most of the time (think our traffic situation- that explains alot), and I started to feel sick. And two weeks ago, I decided to go back to the days when I didn’t have to feel like my skin’s been squeezed everytime i hear an annoying song, so I vowed not to turn on the radio in my car except for news and traffic reports- sorry I still need those. Well, I’m starting to feel much better now. I can enjoy my favourite music on my pc and mobile in peace, and I’m really enjoying this at the moment. More on my newfound addiction in my next post(s)…

This Blog is Full of Words III

A mix of old-school ‘nothing but crap’ tabloids, consumer awareness news, mainstream business digest and independent news and commentary.

I’ve only just realized that the design of The Edge Financial Daily is remarkably similar to that of UK’s the Guardian. Check the layout, the colours, and the font.

Didn’t have a tripod with me, so it’s handheld. It’s really dark and I was shooting without flash (me anti flashie). Came out blurred but oh well, I kinda liked it.

Setting Targets

Haven’t been doing that for ages… well, haven’t been doing it successfully… which explains my unfortunately continuous descent into ‘lazism’… especially when it comes to all these essays that I have to produce… the target I have to set… is a deadline… and get working… but no… the mind ain’t listening…

Camping in campus tonight… trying to hit the target properly… hasn’t got off well yet… spent hours reading about Hugo Chavez, the ALP (Aus), the DPP (Twn), and miscellaneous blogs, and finally a few pages of my reference books for my essay.

Now I’m back in this reallyartificial cocoon, warming up my fingers, exercising my brain, practicing my grammar, exercising my eyes, polishing my thoughts, making up excuses

Lib Dem Leadership Contest- No Other Takers?

Ok, I like to kepoh over things happening elsewhere… including (of course) politics…

One of the ‘it has been coming’ events happened just a couple of days ago- Well, not the call for early elections in Britain, which is  ruled out by Gordon Brown, but the resignation of Liberal Democrats Leader Sir Menzies Campbell. And most commentators have linked his departure to Brown’s decision.

While it’s sad to see Sir Ming leave the post after holding it for less than two years, I do think that the Lib Dems need someone radical, someone fresh, and most importantly someone with a clear sense of direction for the party to assume leadership and battle Cameron and Brown (hopefully it’s firmly towards social liberalization, the Lib Dems are the only mainsteam ‘big enough’ liberal party in Britain now and the progressives of this world can’t lose another forward thinking party to the seduction of neo-conservatism, a-la New Labour). The Liberal Democrats are barely registering double digits in opinion polls while the Tories are strongly challenging New Labour, the party that has been tory-ized over the past decade. While two major parties are increasingly ideologically similar, the miserable poll ratings of the Lib Dems could mean a massive silencing of a truly alternative, progressive voice in parliament.

So we’re buzzing with excitement over who’s gonna be the next leader of the Lib Dems, but more people have ruled themselves out instead of throwing themselves in the ring. Only two of the predicted favourites- Nick Clegg and Chris Huhne, have declared their intentions to run. Only two! Oh C’mon.

I thought Huhne was the better choice among the few candidates when he ran for leadership in 2006 (eventually losing to Campbell), but Clegg has received support from well-respected former leader Paddy Ashdown. There’s still alot to be known about Clegg. We’ll wait and see.

Watch out, David Cameron.

After a 3 year hiatus, I’m returning to the blogosphere. Much has changed since I stopped polluting the interweb with my vocabulary in 2004:

I got lazier, hence the hiatus.
I got a laptop.
I got a driver’s license.
I got kissed.
I stopped writing creatively after so many years of non stop academic writing. Sadly.
Tony Blair has left No.10
Dubya is still in the white house.
Blogger/blogspot became crap.
Media Prima monopolized non-public media in Malaysia.
I’m still struggling with life’s evils.

Fuck it. I wanna move on. I should be writing proper posts.
